The diesel engines established on Audi 100 cars, five-cylinder, have much in common with five-cylinder petrol Audi engines. As the diesel engine has no ignition system, for engine start in the chamber of combustion of each cylinder there is a glow plug which heats up air in the cylinder. The timer of heating provides current giving on glow plugs both during time, and after engine start. Engines of models CM and OE are equipped, besides, with the device of start of the cold engine which has been built in the fuel pump 38 of a high pressure (THBD).
NC engines and 3D have in THBD the electric heating device for simplification of start of the cold engine.
Hасос creates a high pressure (13–17 MPas), and fuel moves in cylinders. The regulator of TNVD provides supply of fuel depending on the provision of a pedal of an accelerator.
The chamber of combustion has such form that at compression air in the cylinder завихряется: it allows to mix better the injected fuel with air. Before THBD the fuel filter which detains pollution and water is established.
In use THBD does not demand leaving. The pump is put in action by a gear belt 30 from a camshaft.
The diesel engine is equipped with the electromagnetic valve which stops supply of fuel at ignition switching off. During diesel engine start at key turn in the ignition lock on this valve tension via the switch of candles of an incandescence moves, and the valve opens топливопровод.
